任命 (rènmìng): v. to appoint/ nominate In ancient China, people called the first day of the calendar "元旦." "元" means "beginning" or "start" and "旦" means "day." The character "旦" is composed of "日" and "一." "日" is the Chinese character for the sun and "一" represents the horizon. It means the sun gradually rising from the horizon. Therefore, "元旦" refers to... 4000 多 年 前 的 时候，有 一位 皇帝 尧，他 为 人们 做了 很多 好事， 很 受 爱戴。
About 4000 years ago, Emperor Yao was greatly adored by his people for his achievements.
Tā qùshì de shíhou, xiǎngzhe zìjǐ de érzi méiyǒu zuò huángdì de cáinéng, yúshì rènmìng shun wéi xiàyírèn huángdì.
他 去世 的 时候，想着 自己 的 儿子 没有 做 皇帝 的 才能， 于是 任命 舜 为 下一任 皇帝。
When he passed away, Yao appointed Shun to be the next emperor instead of his incompetent son.
Yáo duì Shùn shuō: "yǐhòu yídìng yào xuǎn yígè yōuxiù de rén lái zuò huángdì."
尧 对 舜 说：“以后 一定 要 选 一个 优秀 的 人 来 做 皇帝。”
Yao told Shun: "Make sure you choose a brilliant man to be the Emperor."
Yáo sǐ hòu, wèile jìniàn tā, shun jìsì tiāndì.
尧 死 后，为了 纪念 他，舜 祭祀 天地。
After Emperor Yao died, Shun offered sacrifices to heaven and earth in order to memorialize him.
Hòulái Shùn rènmìng zhìshuǐ yǒu gōng de Yǔ zuòle huángdì. Yǔ yě wèi rénmen zuòle xǔduō hǎoshì, shēnshòu àidài.
后来 舜 任命 治水 有 功 的 禹 做了 皇帝。 禹 也 为 人们 做了 许多 好事， 深受 爱戴。

Can you help clarify "Wo yao tang" vs "Wo xiang tang" vs "Wo xiang yao tang?"
Answer:
The Chinese pinyin "wǒ yào tāng" means "I want soup." "wǒ xiǎng tāng" is the Chinese pinyin for "我想汤" which is not often used in Chinese language. As for "想 (xiǎng)," it is often used together with a verb, such as "要 (yào)" and "吃 (chī)." So you can say "我想要汤...
